It was a record breaking Polar Plunge for the Campbellford Memorial Hospital’s auxiliary. A record 75 plungers raised a record $33,000 by taking a dip in a chilly Trent River at noon on Saturday, smashing the $20,000 mark set last year.
They were cheered on by a hearty group of well-wishers who privately questioned the sanity of the hardy fundraisers who entered the water at Lions Club park, watched at a distance by the geese and swans.
The plungers included players for the Trent Hills Thunder, paramedic students at Sir Sandford Fleming College, Rotary international exchange students, staff at Aspira Island Park, staff from Campbellford Memorial Hospital, and a couple of cottagers from Ohio.
Capers’ chef Dorset Mitchell, wearing his chef’s jacket, earned an extra $1,000 when he agreed to double dip.
Aspira Island Park and the Sienna for Seniors Foundation donated $11,885, RBC contributed $1,500, and Bruce and Betsy Thompson matched all pledges and donations up to $10,000.
