Congratulations on your first anniversary Art. The service you provide for the residents of Trent HIlls is immeasurable. It is gratifying to hear that 20% of your subscribers recognize what you're doing is important enough to pay you to keep doing it. It would be wonderful if at least some of the other 80% gave some thought to raising those numbers up a bit. Your subscription price is a bargain. I worked for the Brighton Independent for 11 years and while my role was selling advertising to Trent HIlls businesses to keep the paper afloat, I recognized what I was really doing was paving the way for local journalism. Today there are no print media journalists left covering local council news and without people like yourself, council would be operating in a vacuum. I don't always like the news you bring to my inbox, but I always appreciate the time you have devoted to put it there. I also appreciate your sense of humour and am glad that you are able to inject a modicum of humour into your writing now and then. Your articles are always straightforward and informative. You tell us what we need to know and sometimes reflect on what the implications are. Thank You and keep up the great work.
Thanks, John. I’m glad that people do appreciate the stories, but I still fear what will happen when I eventually stop. The economics don’t support doing this as a living. But I think a younger, more energetic person could generate more revenue.
I think you are laying the groundwork for a new type of local journalism. The Narwal seems to be onto something in this regard with reader supported journalism. I wonder if there are any English teachers reading these stories who might empower students to take the challenge to a higher level. Perhaps through a network of Substacks. In the meantime, we'll take what you can give us.
Art. You are providing a great service to the residents of Trent Hills. It must be lonely sitting in the audience of council. I caught the council meeting on the passing of the budget on the internet. Councillor appeared to be tongue tied. The big question was the eighty thousand to go into reserves for policing. They could have made it one hundred and sixty by cutting out the purchase of one half ton. Was looking forward to a discussion on submissions from the ratepayers that didn,t happen in a public forum. Yes it is not only the Federal Govt. that should go the polls but Trent Hills as well. The administration must have done such a good job that all the council had to do was agree.
I hope Santa will come and bring extra money for infrastructure and to go towards the debt.
Thanks. At some point I’d like to take a longer look at the use of reserves. It’s a way of putting money aside without actually flagging what it’s for so I think it makes it easier to slip big items past ratepayers and reporters.
Your service, insights and talent are both recognized and appreciated. Merry Christmas.
