If you’re going to the Campbellford Library branch, the outdoor swimming pool, or the high school in coming months, you’ll be heading into a construction zone.
Drain Brothers Excavating Ltd. is getting started on a $4.2 million project to give the street a “total reconstruction and total urbanization,” says Neil Allanson, Manager of Roads and Urban Services.
The sewer lines that will be replaced were installed in 1928 and the water lines are just two years newer, 1930.
At one point, the plan was to divide the rebuilding into two phases, but last year the town staff decided it made more sense to do it all in one go – from Bridge Street East to Front Street North – about 700 metres.
“There are efficiencies to be realized by reconstructing the entire street at the same time,” said a staff report to council last August.
There was a wide variation in the bids received. The total bids, including any contingency amount and HST, were:
Drain Brothers -- $4.2 million
Dufferin Construction Co. -- $6.1 million
Trisan Construction -- $7.1 million
An analysis of the bids by D.M. Wills Associates Ltd. found that Drain Brothers offered much lower prices for excavating and traffic control, but was higher for pipe insulation.
Allanson said the improvements will include much better signage and lane markings around the high school.
