Conservative Philip Lawrence has been re-elected as MP for Northumberland-Clarke.
Lawrence received 32,692 votes, compared to 29,588 for Liberal John Goheen, with two of 254 polls still to be counted. Lawrence received 49.7 per cent of the vote, up from 44 per cent in 2021. Goheen received 45 per cent of the vote, in what was basically a two-party race. This was a trend in most ridings.
Lawrence won 39 per cent of the vote in 2019 and 44 per cent in 2021, while the Liberals received 37 per cent of the vote in 2019 and 34 per cent in 2021.
Yesterday, New Democrat Ave Becker received 1,976 votes, just 3 per cent of the total, as the party’s support collapsed here and across the country. In 2021, the NDP received 14 per cent of the votes.
Liberals did flip two of the area ridings as they won in Peterborough, where Emma Harrison received 42,427 votes, 54.1 per cent, beating Conservative incumbent Michelle Ferreri who received 32,267 votes, 41.2 per cent. The NDP candidate only managed 3 per cent in Peterbrough as well.
Liberals also won Bay of Quinte where Chris Malette defeated Conservative incumbent Ryan Williams. Malette received 32,328 votes, 50.4 per cent of the total, while Williams got 44.6 per cent. The NDP candidate garnered 3.7 per cent.
All the other ridings surrounding us were Conservative blue as the party gained seats in Ontario, but not enough to form government.
For me, the highlight of the election coverage last night was when CBC host David Cochran explained what had happened to the NDP vote. “The arse has gone out of the party,” he said, setting his co-workers and the audience laughing. A pretty accurate assessment.
There’s no prize for guessing what province Cochran is from.
