Value of building permits issued drops 46%
Only $28.6 million issued in first six months, down from $53 million in 2023
The value of building permits issued in Trent Hills was down almost half in the first six months of this year, compared to last year, says a report by Stephen White, Chief Building Official.
The report to council shows that so far this year the department has issued 197 permits, compared with 252 last year, with a value of $28.6 million, down from $53 million. Most of the permits – 165 – are for residential work with 40 being for new home construction.
Ten permits were for agricultural purposes, valued at $2.9 million, and 15 were for commercial or industrial purposes, valued at $4.9 million.
Seeking lights or roundabout at County Roads 30 and 29
Trent Hills is asking Northumberland County to install a traffic light or roundabout at the dangerous intersection of County Roads 30 and 29, the road to Warkworth.
More than a decade ago in 2013, the county had consultants study the intersection, which has signs warning it is a high-collision location. No major deficiencies were found, but in 2014 the county again reviewed the intersection and did make improvements.
The county’s 2017 master transportation plan said the site was “relatively close to meeting warrants for traffic signals and should be reviewed in future studies for potential signalization or other improvements such as a roundabout.”
In a motion going to council on Aug. 13, council noted that the county is updating its transportation plan and expects to hire a consultant next year.
The motion says the municipality continues “to hear safety concerns” about the intersection and asks the county to undertake a safety review as soon as possible.
